WHAT IS MADISON AREA OPEN ART STUDIOS ?
MAOAS is an annual free event, in it's 4th year, where Dane County
artists open their studios to the public. In most cases an artist's
studio is a portion of his or her home. Other times it's an actual
studio, sometimes shared with other artists.
The public can visit the artists' studios and experience how these
creative individuals use their personal space to make art. It is an
opportunity to talk with artists, asking about various techniques, art
supplies they use, and how they got into art in the first place. Also,
this is a great way to get ideas on how to get more involved with art.
Much of the art in the studios will be for sale. Since the artists do
not pay a commission, the art will be affordable. There is nothing like
original art in your environment....
STEP BY STEP ON HOW TO ENJOY THE WEEKEND
Start at the Overture Center Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
At the Overture Center, the 126 participating artists will have a work
of art displayed in one of the three Overture Center community
galleries, giving the public an opportunity to view the art and making
it easier to decide which art studios to visit on the week end..
Free maps, with the participating art studios clearly marked, will be
available at the Overture Center and other venues. These give
directions to the studios, making it easy for the public to find their
locations. There will also be Madison-area Artist Annual Manuals
available and free to the public during the week end. In the Artist
Annual Manual, each participating artist will have a photo of his or
her artwork, a brief bio, email and web site information, and a list of
art medium(s) used. The manual is open to all artists in Dane County.
Even if an artist isn't participating in MAOAS, he or she can be in the
manual. This year there are 161 artists are showcased in MAAM.
The public is welcome to attend the OPENING RECEPTION. This is a
wonderful way to to party with the artists and meet other art
enthusiasts.
The Overture Center will also be open Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7th and
8th. This way the public can view the art more privately, make
selections, plan a route, with help of the map, and begin the tour.
MORE ABOUT MAOAS
Since the event is non-juried, all Madison-area artists are given an
equal opportunity to participate, without competition or compromise to
their artistic values. This invites the public to see a broad cross
section of emerging, mid-career, and professional Madison-area artists.
It serves as a catalyst for under-represented artists and gives more
established artists an opportunity to make their presence more visible
in the community. It gives all visual artists an opportunity to have a
more personal dialogue with art enthusiasts. The participating artists
benefit through these interactions by receiving direct feedback,
personal encouragement, and public exposure. The
experience is equally enriching for the public, thus creating a very reciprocal exchange.
Madison Area Open Art Studios is the only regional event open to all
Madison-area artists. This annual event, going on it's fourth year,
showcases the art of emerging, mid-career, and professional artists
working and displaying in their studios, in a free to the public, self
guided tour. The art studios of all the participating artists will be
open to the public the week-end of October 7th and 8th, between
11am-5pm.
Madison-area Open Art Studios was started in 2003, in order to
provide an annual city-wide arts event, with an emphasis on increasing
awareness and appreciation for Madison art and it's artists and giving
the public access to the working, and often living environments of
local artists. This inclusive and democratic event celebrates the
diversity and vitality of the visual arts in the Madison area in a
unique way. Unlike a commercial setting of a gallery, art fair, or
museum, this is an opportunity for artists to share their creative and
technical processes directly with the public, who in turn, have the
opportunity to explore, learn, and expand their artistic horizons and
collections. By creating a personal connection between the public and
Madison area artists, in this way, a more intimate understanding and
appreciation is established; more individuals may try doing art
themselves, or may purchase art for the first time, or simply have a
great time visiting Madison's creative community on their own turf.
For three years now, Madison-area open Art Studios has held this annual
week-end event, that has not only inspired the local art community, but
also the Madison community, at large. The participating artists have
received wonderfully positive feedback from people in their
neighborhood, community, and surrounding communities who have visited
these art studios. "This is amazing." "I am really enjoying going in to
an artist's studio and seeing for myself what it's like." "This is so
much more interesting than a gallery." "I feel like I can understand
more about the mind set of an artist." "I want to start doing art
myself." Madison-area Open Art Studios is a free event and open to the
public. It provides the Madison area with the opportunity to celebrate
and support the vibrant visual arts community, while enabling artists
to share their creative talents.
In 2003 Cate Loughran, a Wisconsin artist who lived in California for
over a decade brought the idea of an "Artist Open Studios" event to
Madison. She was involved in similar events, both on San Francisco and
the Lake Tahoe area, when living in California. She developed a
structure that suits this community and proceeded to organize and
coordinate the event with the help of volunteers. No one is being paid,
including the organizer. All the work is being done by by volunteers.
Artist fees and grants fund this event.
